  • The area above the ankle where the foot needs space to move

Measure the distance along the front of the shin between those two areas.

This measurement is more useful than measuring from the middle of the kneecap all the way to the ankle bone. The guard must fit inside the player’s functional movement space, not occupy the entire lower leg.

2. Compare the measurement with the guard itself

Check the manufacturer’s chart and, when available, the guard’s actual shell dimensions.

A size name tells you where a product sits within that brand’s range. The dimensions tell you how much space it will occupy on the leg.

Width matters as well as length. A guard can have suitable vertical clearance but still pinch if it is too wide or its curve does not match the player’s shin.

3. Center the guard

Place the guard over the front of the shin rather than too far toward the inside or outside of the leg.
